Handcrafted Kalimbas
The kalimba, also called a thumb piano, originated in Africa and combines a simple, intuitive design with rich harmonic tone. Played with the thumbs, metal tines sing against a wooden body that both shapes and amplifies each note. Treesong Woodshop kalimbas honor this heritage by bringing precision craftsmanship to every instrument.
Solid Hardwood
Each instrument begins as a solid block of figured hardwood, chosen for its acoustic density and visual character. Our woods include premium domestic and exotic species selected to yield warmth, sustain, and a unique voice. Because every block is distinct, no two kalimbas look or sound exactly the same.
Hybrid Construction
We draw on traditional ukulele-building techniques and apply them to our kalimba designs, with a focus on balance, feel, and consistency. Modern fabrication and setup methods are used to achieve this while preserving a traditional wood aesthetic.s
Tuning
Before leaving the shop, each kalimba is hand-tuned to ensure balanced tonal response and reliable playability. We test every tine for clarity and stability, eliminating dead spots and setting a strong foundation for further tuning at home.
